The Ali Asghar Water Appeal (AAWA) is inspired by Karbala and the thirst of Ali Asghar (AS). Running during Muharram and Safar, it provides clean water and WASH facilities to some of the world’s most water-insecure areas, from African villages to South Asian cities.Globally, 2.2 billion people lack safe water (UNICEF/WHO, 2023). Contaminated water causes 485,000 diarrhoeal deaths annually, while poor sanitation and hygiene claim 829,000 lives—more than HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis combined (WHO, 2022).
